In May of 2023, the Ugandan President signed the Anti-Homosexuality Act into law, codifying one of the most extreme pieces of anti-LGBTQI+ legislation in the world.
In recent months, Rainbow Railroad has experienced an alarming surge in requests for help from the LGBTQI+ community in Uganda.
We’ve also received a spike in requests for assistance from our partners on the ground in Uganda, including under-resourced organizations and shelters in rural Uganda, which have received little to no international attention. We’re also seeing a worsening trend of community rejection — including evictions, violent arrests, and loss of employment — as a major safety concern for LGBTQI+ individuals.
