“I’ve regained my inspiration for life. I smile again, wake up with peace of mind, and dare to dream.”

For Herberth, a gay man from El Salvador, resettling in the United States was a life-changing milestone. After years of facing discrimination and limited opportunities, he arrived in Chicago with support from his private sponsorship group and Rainbow Railroad. At 28 years old, Herberth embarked on a journey of transformation — one filled with challenges, growth, and hope for the future.

Finding Strength in Change

The road to Chicago wasn’t easy. “I started the resettlement process through the International Organization for Migration, which connected me with Rainbow Railroad,” he recalls. “Through their help, I was able to navigate the sponsorship and relocation process.”

Adapting to life in the U.S. came with its hurdles. “The biggest challenge has been the language,” Herberth shares. “My English wasn’t great when I arrived, but I’ve worked hard every day to improve it, and it’s opened up new opportunities for me.

Despite the difficulties, Herberth draws strength from his ability to adapt and find meaning in every situation. “What gives me resilience is knowing that while I can’t change or control everything, I can be strategic about how I face challenges. I’ve learned to direct my efforts toward building the life I want.

Moments of Joy and Accomplishment

2024 brought Herberth many moments of joy and progress. “The most memorable moments were when I landed two jobs despite the language barrier. Another milestone was having my first fluent conversation in English,” he says with pride.

These small but powerful achievements have given him hope. “It brings me joy to know my reality has changed. In such a short time, I’ve accomplished things I never thought possible. I’m finally building the future I always dreamed of.

A New Perspective on Life

Moving to the United States has profoundly shifted Herberth’s outlook. “I feel like I’ve regained my inspiration for life. I wake up with peace of mind and a renewed sense of purpose,” he reflects. “I’ve learned to value my ability to adapt to challenges and embrace the constant change life brings. These lessons have helped me move forward and create opportunities for myself.

Sharing Wisdom and Advocating for Change

Herberth believes that adaptability is key for others embarking on similar journeys. “Life isn’t static; it’s always changing. Embracing change, even when it means letting go, has been essential for me,” he shares.

He also hopes to raise awareness about the refugee experience. “Resettlement isn’t just about survival — it’s about adaptation and creating a dignified future,” he says. “People who face challenges develop incredible resilience and problem-solving skills. If we’re given the right support, we can contribute positively to the communities we join.

Herberth calls on policymakers and community leaders to create programs that help refugees become self-sufficient. “I’d highlight the resilience we bring and the skills we’ve developed. With the right resources, we can achieve our dreams and make meaningful contributions.”

Looking Ahead to 2025

As Herberth plans for a new year, he’s focused on education and personal growth. “I’m determined to go back to school and continue my professional career,” he says. “I’m working on applying for a student loan and improving my English to make this dream a reality.”

To those who supported him on his journey, Herberth expresses heartfelt gratitude. “Rainbow Railroad and my sponsors have been a blessing. Their support came at a crucial moment in my life, and I will always be grateful. Thank you for believing in me.”
