“I am a resilient woman who has faced discrimination and vulnerability, but I have constantly fought to achieve my goals and defend my right to be visible and respected.”

For Julieth, a transgender woman from El Salvador, the decision to leave her home and family behind was heartbreaking but necessary. After enduring years of violence and discrimination due to her gender identity, she made the difficult decision to relocate to the United States in search of safety and a chance to live authentically.

“Last year, I arrived in the United States with the hope of building a better life — one where I could live without fear, and achieve personal and professional fulfillment,” she shares.

A Journey of Firsts

Julieth’s journey has been marked by courage and historic achievements. In 2024, she became the first transgender woman to graduate from the University of El Salvador with a degree in Business Administration under her legal name. “This accomplishment meant so much because I fought for a legal ruling to change my name. It’s a victory not only for me but for others like me,” she reflects.

Despite this milestone, starting over in a new country hasn’t been easy. “Leaving my family was the hardest part,” she says. “But I knew it was the best decision for my life. In El Salvador, I didn’t feel safe. Starting over here has been challenging — adapting to a new culture, language, and way of life — but I see it as an opportunity for a fresh start.”

Support That Changes Lives

When Julieth arrived in the United States, Rainbow Railroad and her sponsorship group were there to help. “It’s been wonderful to have their support. The team of volunteers made my resettlement process easier, and I will be forever grateful for everything they’ve done.”

One of the most joyful moments of 2024 was starting her hormone replacement therapy. “Seeing the changes in my body is something only those who have experienced this process can truly understand. It has brought me immense happiness and made me feel more at peace with myself,” she says.

Building Resilience and Advocating for Change

Julieth’s strength comes from her determination and the lessons instilled by her mother. “She taught me to never give up, to fight for what I want. My resilience also comes from my desire to show the world that gender identity doesn’t limit anyone’s abilities. I want to leave a legacy for the next generation of trans individuals: never let fear stop you from living your truth.”

Her message to policymakers and community leaders underscores two urgent priorities: mental health support and clearer communication about legal protections and resources for refugees.

“The resettlement process is incredibly challenging, and mental and emotional health is essential for navigating the stress of adjusting to a new reality, culture, and language. Projects focused on mental health would make a significant difference,” she explains.

She also stresses the importance of accurate, timely information. “If protection laws for refugees exist, we need to be clearly informed about our rights, benefits, and responsibilities. Too often, the information provided in our home countries doesn’t match what we learn after resettlement, creating confusion. Clear guidance in the first weeks of arrival would help us feel more secure and better prepared to adapt.”

Looking to the Future

As Julieth looks ahead to 2025, her goals reflect her resilience and hope. She’s determined to finish her English studies, pursue professional opportunities, and work in an organization that supports migrants and human rights. “I dream of a stable life, renting a place of my own, and building a future where I can thrive.”

To those who supported her journey, she expresses profound gratitude. “You’ve given me the chance to live without fear and see life with new hope. The happiness you’ve brought into my life is beyond words. Thank you for believing in me.”

Julieth’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, community, and the transformative impact of support. “It’s a difficult journey, but the result is worth it. Starting over isn’t easy, but it’s an opportunity to build a life full of hope and possibility.”
