Rebuilding with Resilience: How Cabrel Found Hope & Purpose in a New Home

After a long and difficult journey, Cabrel arrived in the United States and experienced a moment he’ll never forget. “When I landed in San Francisco, my sponsor group was waiting for me with a sign that said, ‘Welcome Cabrel,’ and a rainbow flag. I will never forget that day — I was so happy to see them.”

“I never wanted to leave home,” reflects Cabrel, “but I had no choice.”

Born in Bafang, Cameroon, Cabrel grew up in a country where living openly as a gay man was dangerous. Confronting constant threats of violence became a matter of survival. “The most challenging part of 2024 was leaving Tunisia, where I had hoped to claim asylum, after fleeing Cameroon and traveling through several countries — all in pursuit of a place where I could finally live as my true self.”

Now, in a country where he can live freely, Cabrel is rebuilding his life with determination and hope. “I have a job. I’m going back to school. I can walk in the street with my boyfriend without anyone insulting us or troubling us.”

Returning to school has been a source of pride and joy this past year. “I stopped going to school many years ago, and today, I’m happy to be learning again. It’s a chance for a better future.” His goal for 2025 is clear: “I’m determined to get my high school diploma and go to university to become a social worker.”

Reflecting on his journey, Cabrel acknowledges the harsh realities refugees face. “When I left home, I never imagined I’d be here. The journey is unpredictable, and you can easily lose your life because of who you are. My advice is to be ready — anything can happen.”

But through it all, Cabrel has found strength in faith and resilience. “I always believe there’s a solution, no matter the challenge.”

To those who supported him, Cabrel shares a simple yet powerful message: “I thank them not because I’m in the USA, but because they saved my life in a moment when I needed it most.”

Looking ahead, Cabrel calls on policymakers and community leaders to do more for refugees, especially LGBTQI+ refugees. “Focus on motivation and psychological assistance. Many of us need that support to rebuild and keep going.”

As he builds his future, Cabrel is also advocating for others, knowing the power of hope and community. “It’s a process that takes time, but when it’s achieved, you’re proud — not just for yourself, but for a whole community.”
