The Global Compact on Refugees, by which governments made commitments for refugee solutions, made little mention of LGBTQI+ persons.
In 2021 UNHCR hosted a Global Roundtable on LGBTQI+ forced displacement. The convening, which took place virtually with 13 sessions over three weeks, marked a significant milestone in addressing the gaps faced by LGBTQI+ refugees, asylum seekers and people on the move. Rainbow Railroad was a co-facilitator and key participant in the convening which resulted in 33 important recommendations constituting a foundational roadmap for further action for UNCHR, governments and civil society in regard to the protection of and solutions for LGBTIQ+ forcibly displaced and stateless persons throughout the world.
